Get to know the Coiba National Park.
A paradise to visit in Panama.
The Coiba National Park was created by decree in 1991. It is a group of islands of volcanic nature that form a natural barrier to habitable ecosystems of both marine and animal fauna, as well as protecting the coast and the islands themselves so, this makes it an amazing place for snorkeling and exploring nature, unique species and adventure.
One of the natural gems of Panama, which is made up of several islands, the largest being the one that gives the name to the park.
Isla Coiba is the largest island of the whole Centrician Pacific, with an extension of approximately 50,000 hectares, along with the rest of the islands, the Jicarón Islands (2,002 ha), Brincanco (330 ha), Grape (257 ha), Coibita ( 242 ha), Canal de Afuera (240 ha), Jicarita (125 ha, the southernmost point of the Republic of Panama), Pájaros (45 ha), Afuerita (27 ha), and many more, form the 53,000 ha approximately, of insular territories.
All this set of islands, more than 250 kms of coast in natural state, and all covered by a dense wooded vegetation, where you can see unique species.
The conservation of this archipelago, is due to a greater extent to the fact that the island of Coiba, was used by the Panamanian government as a penal colony. In times of dictatorship, the prison was used as a kind of concentration camps for opponents of the regime.
Although there are no exact figures, it is believed that more than 200 people were tortured and killed on the island. The prison was demolished in 2004, fifteen years after the end of the dictatorial regime.

Multitude of marine and terrestrial species.
The orca, The humpback whale and the dolphins are frequent in the waters of the park.
Its coral reefs are the best preserved of all the Panamanian Pacific so the sustainable management of resources is essential to conserve marine and terrestrial fauna and flora.
Currently, together with four other national parks, the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, Gorgona and Malpelo in Colombia, and the Coco Island in Costa Rica, they constitute an essential area within the Marine Corridor of Conservation of the Eastern Tropical Pacific, with four economic zones of four countries, and 211 million hectares, and an incalculable value of marine and terrestrial fauna and flora.
