🏝️ Coiba Island: Complete Guide to the National Park (What to See & Do)

The Coiba National Park is one of Panama's best-kept natural treasures: a pristine Pacific archipelago with biodiversity so rich it's known as «the Galápagos of Panama»🌊 In this guide we cover what it is, what you can see and do, and how to visit.

🌎 What is Coiba National Park?

Coiba is Panama's largest island and the heart of a national park declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.Located off the coast of Veraguas, the park protects 38 islands and islets and one of the largest coral reef areas in the Eastern Pacific. It's part of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor, a key route for migratory marine life.

🦈 Biodiversity: "the Galápagos of Panama"

Coiba's fame comes from its exceptional biodiversity. In its waters you'll find:

  • 🐋 Humpback whales (season Jul–Oct) and whale sharks (Dec–Mar)
  • 🦈 Reef and hammerhead sharks, manta rays
  • 🐢 Sea turtles and dolphins
  • 🐠 An incredible variety of colorful fish

And on land: howler monkeys, crocodiles and endemic birds. It's one of the richest marine life destinations on the planet.

⛓️ A curious past: the former prison

Here's the fact that surprises everyone: the reason Coiba is so well preserved is its history. It was a penal colony (prison) from 1919 to 2004. For nearly a century access was restricted, which kept the island virtually untouched. Today you can see the remains of the old prison station as part of the tour.
